Three months after adding ads to an app, the AdMob dashboard shows 2,300 yen in estimated earnings, and nothing has reached the bank account.
The first worry for most people is whether the balance quietly disappears if it never reaches the threshold. As an indie developer, I find it easier to settle that kind of question by reading only what Google's Help pages actually state, so that is what this note does.
The short answer: a balance under the threshold rolls over
The AdMob Help says that when earnings fall short of the threshold, they are combined with the next month's earnings. A string of short months does not wipe the balance.
For an account reporting in Japanese yen, the payment threshold is 8,000 yen (100 USD for a USD account). It depends on the account's reporting currency.
One caution. The threshold is judged against the confirmed amount on the Payments page, not the estimated earnings shown on the dashboard. The Help notes that thresholds are based on the payment history page rather than estimated earnings. Many "I passed 8,000 yen but wasn't paid" moments come down to this difference.
How the monthly cycle works
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| 3rd of the month | Last month's earnings are finalized |
| 20th | Your balance on this day must have reached the threshold |
| Around the 21st | Payment is issued if there is no payment hold |
The dates are approximate and can shift with the payment method. In my own view, checking the balance on the 20th and the hold status once a month is enough.
If you passed the threshold and still got nothing: three screens
1. Address (PIN) verification. You must enter the PIN that arrives by mail before any payment is issued. The Help says you have four months from the date the PIN is generated. A postcard sitting unopened on a desk is more common than it sounds.
2. Payment holds. A hold on the 20th means no payment that month. Once the hold is removed, payment is issued within a few days.
3. Payment method and any requested details. Depending on your location, additional details are required to receive payment. If they are missing, processing stalls even with a healthy balance.
None of these relate to ad traffic, and all of them live in the payment settings.
What deserves real attention: a deactivated account
Carry-over is not the risk. The Help states that AdMob accounts are deactivated if they haven't served ads for six months.
A deactivated account can be reactivated by signing in, confirming re-approval, and verifying a phone number, and the Help says outstanding earnings can be accessed that way. The apps must be submitted for a readiness review again before they serve ads.
If you cancel an account, the final payment also requires the balance to pass the cancellation threshold (1,000 yen for yen accounts), plus a payment method, the requested details, identity verification, and address verification. Without them, you are asked to confirm that you won't be paid the remaining balance.
For small apps I would keep just two things in mind: the six-month no-serving rule and the conditions for cancelling.
A small script to estimate when you will reach the threshold
import math
THRESHOLD_JPY = 8000 # payment threshold for yen accounts (per the Help)
def months_to_payout(confirmed_balance: int, monthly_earnings: int) -> int:
"""Months until payout, from the confirmed balance and monthly confirmed earnings."""
if monthly_earnings <= 0:
raise ValueError("Monthly earnings must be positive")
remaining = max(THRESHOLD_JPY - confirmed_balance, 0)
return math.ceil(remaining / monthly_earnings)
# Confirmed balance 2,300 yen, 600 yen confirmed per month
print(months_to_payout(2300, 600)) # -> 10That example takes ten months. If ads keep serving, the six-month rule is not a problem, but if you are thinking of retiring the app, look at this number first. Always use the amount from the Payments page as the balance.
Next steps
- Open the Payments page and check the confirmed balance and address verification status
- If the PIN is still pending, note its four-month deadline
- For apps you plan to stop updating, decide in advance the date when ad serving would hit six months of silence
